Altura Los Angeles presents ¡Sumo Presente! An exhibition celebrating the life, music and Art of Nectali "Sumohair” Diaz. Nectali (b. 1979. Arcelia, Guerrero, MX.) was a beloved son, brother, uncle, friend, artist collaborator, educator and an inspiration to many and all who crossed paths with him and experienced his spirit. As an integral part of the LA and global creative scene, Nectali leaves behind a legacy of beautiful art and music that will live with us forever. ¡Sumo Presente! highlights the many avenues that drove Diaz's creativity throughout the years an ofrenda offers a colorful glimpses of Diaz from his youth to his most recent projects and inspirations. The adjacent wall is made up of images from people in his community including friends and loved ones. Next, two video installations show his foray into storytelling and directing beginning with several short films centered around what he referred to as his “Hair Stories”. In these videos, Diaz depicted hair as a vessel for growth, change and acceptance. This is accompanied by Diaz's more recent graphic visuals and video that directly accompanied his music production. In these graphics, Diaz aimed to uplift marginalized people worldwide including the Afro-Mexican community, the queer community and indigenous communities in revolt. Finally, the centerpiece of the show is a recreation of Diaz's living room that was his work space. It is nearly identical to how he left it before his passing.
His sudden passing leaves his family with a tremendous amount of pain. Nectali was a great supporter of all of his friends and nutured a beautiful community around him. Now we have the opportunity to demonstrate the generosity he showed us. This exhibition has been organized by some of his closest friends in art, music and in life in direct collaboration with the Dlaz family. Rest In Peace Nectali AKA Sumohair Proxima Estacion Esperanza
